New Gartner’s Magic Quadrant report for Enterprise Architecture Tools (Oct 2019)

Gartner has published an updated Magic Quadrant report for Enterprise Architecture, and they have updated its market definition and functionality for enterprise architecture (EA) tools for 2019.

Enterprise Architecture Definition:

"EA is a discipline that proactively and holistically leads enterprise responses to disruptive forces. It does this by identifying and analyzing the execution of change toward the desired business vision and outcomes. Mainstream viewpoints of EA include:
-  Business architecture, which guides people, process and organizational change
-  Information architecture, which focuses on the consistent sharing of information across the enterprise
-  Security architecture, which is focused on relating business problems, threats and agile IT to the defenses the organization needs to build
-  Solution architecture, which develops a direction for managing the portfolios of to-be solutions
- Technical architecture, which focuses on evolving the technical infrastructure"  (Gartner, 2019)

About the Magic Quadrant

The Magic Quadrant are focused on the  diverse market of EA tool vendors, and Gartner studies 15 evaluation criteria, one of them is related to product or service functions, but the other 14 evaluation criteria are focused on  the vendors’ ability to meet the requirements of this market, so Gartner advises that the best EA tool vendor for their organizations might be outside the Leaders quadrant.

MEGA International Launches HOPEX Integrated Risk Management Solution

MEGA International has announced the launch of its HOPEX Integrated Risk Management solution offering a comprehensive platform enabling organizations to implement an efficient and effective risk-aware culture through an integrated approach by gathering IT assets, business processes, and risk data into a single repository for a complete view of existing risks.

MEGA’s Integrated Risk Management solution provides an integrated view of risks, controls, incidents, compliance, and audit with business operations, so that risk is treated as a whole and not in silos.

“In today’s digital era, a siloed approach to managing risks, without a comprehensive view of risks, business, and IT assets, is no longer effective,” remarked Lucio de Risi, CEO of MEGA. “With continuous business and regulatory changes, companies are challenged with needing to quickly and comprehensively assess the impact on risks and operations due to these changes.”

Thanks to HOPEX’s single platform that encompasses risks, processes, and IT assets, risk and compliance management is centralized, enabling companies to move from a check-the-box compliance approach to a risk-aware culture.

HOPEX Integrated Risk Management enables the alignment of risk types with business processes, IT systems, and centralized control systems. As a result, organizations can manage their risk more efficiently, economically, and holistically by managing all dimensions of governance, risk, and compliance from strategy and business modeling to IT systems analysis and data modeling.

“Our risk management solution has the ability to provide organizations with more detailed and reliable information about a company’s risk exposure,” noted Ludovic Relandeau, Senior Vice President and Global Head of Products for MEGA. “These improved estimations of potential risks will help business leaders and executives make better informed business decisions about corporate priorities to help reduce the company’s exposure to risk and possible liabilities.”

MEGA’s HOPEX Integrated Risk Management solution includes:
  • An integrated view of risks, controls, incidents, compliance, and audit so that risk is treated as a whole, rather than in silos.
  • Ability to efficiently identify risks in a structured risk library and assess them based on their impact and likelihood. For faster increased productivity, risk assessments are performed through automated assessment campaigns.
  • An aggregated view of risks, controls, incidents, compliance, and audit with business operations, including IT assets and business processes. This provides a clear picture of how these items are tied to business and IT portfolios and the impact on each due to regulatory changes or new business needs.
  • Embedded features to increase the efficiency of risk management efforts including: assessment templates to quickly assess risks and controls; integrated information on risks, controls, incidents, and regulatory requirements; a personalized to-do list to manage daily activities in an efficient manner; multiple widgets to build custom dashboards and monitor key indicators; and action plans, collaborative workflows, and social features to enhance risk mitigation efforts.

Through a single shared collaborative platform, HOPEX Integrated Risk Management creates a synergistic environment to support all stakeholders involved in managing risk. With a completely redesigned user experience, the solution offers a smooth and seamless design that’s simple to navigate.

Avolution Reports Record Demand for Enterprise Architecture and Digital Productivity Software Across EMEA

Avolution has reported record demand and sales growth for its ABACUS software during Q1 2018, with growth tracking to accelerate through the first half of the year and beyond.

Peter Collins, EMEA Regional Manager at Avolution said that this demand was part of a trend for enterprises to lay a strong but adaptable foundation for IT and business systems in a “continual transformation” environment. He also noted that the requirement for enterprise architecture support software which can be deployed in the cloud was maturing.

“We’re receiving particularly strong growth in enquiries from companies in the UK, Germany and Switzerland, and also from the Middle East and Africa. Avolution’scloud-based modeling software has allowed us to increase deployment speed, achieving quicker time-to-value for the practitioners and executives who rely on the digital business models, cost calculations and analytics, reports and data visualizations that ABACUS provides.”

Collins said that cloud-based deployment is one of the features which is enabling the digital business knowledge captured in ABACUS to be maintained and available much more widely through the business.

“Companies are using cloud deployment to arm a broader and more inclusive user base -- well beyond the enterprise architecture and digital transformation offices --with detailed knowledge of systems and processes. They’re providing access to business analysts, application owners and infrastructure managers making sure that they can update information early and often.”

Architects are also moving to leverage information from ServiceNow and FlexeraTechnopedia using dedicated adapters, and integrating data via ABACUS’ REST API.

“Companies are coming to us with the requirement to future proof their enterprise architecture investments and capabilities. That is, they need to be confident that they can adjust the way they do architectural and digital planning and the underlying metamodels and databases as their business itself changes. The XML-based graph database on which ABACUS is based provides this high level of adaptability and flexibility."

Avolution is the first software vendor to provide fully updated support for the new TOGAF® Standard, Version 9.2, launched  in April 2018. TOGAF is an Open Group standard used by 70,000+ enterprise architects and solution architects worldwide.

A strong Enterprise Architecture practice will help prepare organizations for GDPR

Any private or public organization anywhere in the world could be caught by General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR, EU Regulation 2016/679) if it processes personal data relating to EU citizens, has a European presence, or has a website offering goods or services to EU citizens. And it critically affects all personal data, changing the way that entire organizations interact with personally identifiable information. It requires changes in both security and processing as well as in the comprehensive documentation they must maintain. It came into force on May 25, 2016 with a moratorium of two years, so they must be ready by May 25, 2018. Penalties for not complying with the legislation are potentially eye-watering, including fines of up to €20 million or 4% of annual global revenue.
The problem lies in how to adapt to regulations (with more than 99 different rules and stipulations around data), which is not obvious and as usual depends on interpretation. According to analyst IDC, 78% of European companies' technology managers still do not know what impact it will have on their business, and the rest only confirm that they already comply with 20%, making it an urgent task for most of European companies. It is estimated that more than 50% of organizations that have to comply with GDPR regulations will not be fully prepared by the end of 2018.
The Regulation is the most significant change in the fundamental rights of data privacy in 20 years, ensuring that personal data are protected regardless of where they are sent, processed or stored. It includes 8 fundamental rights: right to be informed, right to access, right to rectification, right to forget (to erase data when they are not necessary for the purpose with which they were collected), right to restrict processing, right to data portability, the right to object, and the right to make decisions and create automatic profiles.
Companies must take action to have Active Responsibility for these rights. It is not enough to act against an infraction. It must be proactive and be able to demonstrate compliance with the rules and it is a process of continuous compliance that forces to think and work constantly within the legal framework of regulation. They will have to protect data from design and default, implement security measures, maintain a record of treatments, know the flow of data, manage data as they change over time, conduct impact assessments on data protection, appoint a Data Protection Officer (DPO) with legal competence and technological security infrastructure (it is estimated that 28,000 DPOs will be required in Europe), notify any security breach within 72 hours to the Spanish Data Protection Agency, and promote codes of conduct and certification schemes.
Companies will have to establish barriers in their processes, so that the sensitive information is treated according to the purpose of its use, with confidentiality and integrity. Technology plays a key role in ensuring legal compliance, and must meet privacy requirements (from collection, treatment ... to destruction) and not just security requirements.
Data has become a competitive asset. Companies are collecting as much data as possible on consumers, sometimes before knowing exactly what, how or when that data will be used, causing imbalances between what we know and what they know about us. This practice of data maximization changes with the GDPR towards the principle of data minimization, forcing companies to capture only the least amount of personal data for the shortest time possible and to eliminate it as quickly as possible after have completed their specific purpose.
Although the DPO is primarily responsible for compliance with and implementation of the GDPR, this individual will need a team of specialists to be successful. The Enterprise Architect plays a critical role on this GDPR compliance team. Enterprise architects are uniquely positioned to help their organization to demonstrate that they comply. Leveraging their architecture models for security and privacy analyses, architects can provide cross-cutting analyses on the use and protection of data across the enterprise, its processes, people and IT systems.
Gartner proposes to focus on five high priority changes to cope quickly with EU GDPR:
  1. Determine your role under the GDPR.
  2. Appoint your data protection officer.
  3. Demonstrate accountability in all processing activities.
  4. Check your cross-border data flows.
  5. Prepare for data subjects exercising their rights.
As Enterprise Architecture (EA) is a key for GDPR compliance, most EA solution vendors are providing extensions to their products and specific information that helps compliance.

Gartner has published a new Enterprise Architecture Tools Magic Quadrant

The analyst Gartner Inc. has published its Magic Quadrant for Enterprise Architecture Tools on 24 May 2017.  Enterprise architecture (EA) and technology innovation leaders face unprecedented change and will likely require an EA tool to enable them to manage complexity more effectively. This research informs them of the main EA tool vendors in an evolving marketplace driven by the dynamics of digital business, that it includes the following vendors: Avolution, BiZZdesign, BOC Group, Erwin, Mega, Orbus Software, Planview, QualiWare, Software AG, Sparx Systems and Unicom Systems.

Recognition as leaders (execute well against their current vision and are well positioned for tomorrow) was given to  Software AG, Avolution, Mega, QualiWare and BiZZdesign.

Gartner has evaluated all vendors individually and did not rank or score them against each other. As Gartner explains, the inclusion in the Magic Quadrant does not necessarily mean that a vendor is capable for the needs of a particular user organization, but it can help when the evaluation is doing as the decision will depend of the specific evaluation criteria.

Gartner expects that EA will continue to play an active and significant role in the transformation to digital business, so these digital business requirements will increase the purchase and use of EA tools by organizations of all sizes.

Any Business Innovation and Transformation requieres an Enterprise Architecture

Everyone realizes that organizations have to be innovating or continually transforming themselves to be competitive in a changing world like the present one. Both Innovation (doing something different or something new) and Transformation (making changes to something that already exists: optimizing, improving ...) will involve making changes in the organization to take it from a current state to a future state with the changes implemented. Considering that "55% of the current 500 Fortune organizations will not be in the Fortune elite in 2025" according to the OECD, "86% of executives say that innovation is extremely or very important to strategy of growth of their companies, but only 19% believe they succeed with any of the components needed" according to IBM Global, and "72% of transformation programs fail to meet their real objectives" according to McKinsey, we must wonder how to carry out this process of innovation or business transformation.
In the area of business processes, you have to consider what dimension reach the innovation or transformation project, since we can talk about Process Improvement (the process works but we want it to be more efficient, effective, more optimal ...), Process Redesign (the process is not functioning as it should, correcting it by changing the flow, eliminating parts of the process, automating parts ...), Process Reengineering (fundamental revision and radical redesign of processes for dramatic improvements in critical metrics) or Paradigm Shift to a Process Oriented Company (a change in the basic assumptions that implies a major change in the culture of the organization), and its management of change, risks and impacts in the organization should be controlled and made the right decisions so as not to fail.
If we think about our home and about a possible reform by adding a bathroom, we would have to study the viability of this project, and for it, we will have to take into account that the legislation allows us to make modifications in our house (for example, to create a window outside from the new bathroom), which can be carried out (more hot water capacity, longer pipes, throwing a wall ...) when studying the plans (foundation, distribution, electrical system, plumbing system). The study will be able to make a budget and a project of realization. In the same way, companies need to study their Enterprise Architecture (an integral image of their organization and the relationships among the main assets of a company, including processes, people, products, services, applications, technology, documents, etc.) to carry out any project of business innovation or transformation, because it is required to know with the maximum certainty what, where, when, how, how much it costs, what risks it has and why to carry out that project.
