The combination of automation, integration, and API management will prove increasingly irresistible for global organizations

MuleSoft, in collaboration with Deloitte Digital and Vanson Bourne, surveyed 1,051 global IT leaders across the globe (United States, the United Kingdom, France, Germany, the Netherlands, Australia, Singapore, Hong Kong, and Japan) between October and November 2021 on the state of connectivity and digital transformation. And they have published their seventh annual Connectivity Benchmark Report. All respondents work at an enterprise organization in the public or private sector with at least 1,000 employees.

Some Conclusions:
  • Organizations could lose on average $7m if they fail to successfully complete digital transformation initiatives.
  • Data silos are a persistent challenge for 90% of organizations.
  • Over half (52%*) of IT projects weren’t delivered on time last year
  • Those organizations that can build a foundation of digital agility will be best positioned to adapt to change quickly without being slowed by IT or operations bottlenecks.
  • Some 88% of respondents said integration challenges continue to slow digital transformation initiatives, virtually unchanged from the 2021 report’s figure of 87%.
  • Firms are spending too much on custom integration, on average, they spent $3.65 million in custom integration labor in 2021, versus $3.5 million in the previous 12 months.
  • The vast majority (98%) of organizations now use APIs.
  • Automation emerges as a key ingredient. Nearly a third (31%) of organizations plan to invest in robotic process automation (RPA), versus 13% a year ago. Most are currently managing this (67%) and tracking it (58%) centrally via IT. It is IT developers (72%) and IT operations (66%) who are most involved in automating business processes and tasks.
The combination of automation, integration, and API management will prove increasingly irresistible for global organizations as they seek to deliver the experiences their employees and customers crave.

Bottom line

My point of view is that being focused on automation only as an IT project is a big mistake, and requires being focused on custom integration to be successful. The question is whether this is a suitable strategy for digitalization or digital transformation and, furthermore, if it is focused on obtaining a competitive advantage to grow in accordance with the corporate strategy. Operational excellence requires analyzing end-to-end processes using the Enterprise Architecture and Business Process Management disciplines, so you will be focused on process improvements aligned to strategy. These analyzes will make it possible to define a roadmap for IT projects in accordance with the objectives and challenges of the business. This way you will see if an automation of tasks is necessary or not, integrating application data or routing data via a workflow. Probably moving slowly is because improvement scenarios are not being analyzed according to strategic priorities, impact on the organization and business, and implementation complexity. If there is no correct planning, it will not be successful and it is most likely that the inefficient will be automated, multiplying the inefficiency.

New Gartner’s Magic Quadrant report for Enterprise Architecture Tools (Oct 2019)

Gartner has published an updated Magic Quadrant report for Enterprise Architecture, and they have updated its market definition and functionality for enterprise architecture (EA) tools for 2019.

Enterprise Architecture Definition:

"EA is a discipline that proactively and holistically leads enterprise responses to disruptive forces. It does this by identifying and analyzing the execution of change toward the desired business vision and outcomes. Mainstream viewpoints of EA include:
-  Business architecture, which guides people, process and organizational change
-  Information architecture, which focuses on the consistent sharing of information across the enterprise
-  Security architecture, which is focused on relating business problems, threats and agile IT to the defenses the organization needs to build
-  Solution architecture, which develops a direction for managing the portfolios of to-be solutions
- Technical architecture, which focuses on evolving the technical infrastructure"  (Gartner, 2019)

About the Magic Quadrant

The Magic Quadrant are focused on the  diverse market of EA tool vendors, and Gartner studies 15 evaluation criteria, one of them is related to product or service functions, but the other 14 evaluation criteria are focused on  the vendors’ ability to meet the requirements of this market, so Gartner advises that the best EA tool vendor for their organizations might be outside the Leaders quadrant.

Gartner published the Magic Quadrant for Robotic Process Automation (RPA) Software

The analyst Gartner Inc. has published its Magic Quadrant for RPA software in July 2019. According to Gartner, "RPA is still relatively small market with a total revenue of slightly less than $850 million in 2018. However, RPA is the fastest-growing software subsegment officially tracked by Gartner, with year-on-year growth of over 63% in 2018". Gartner defines RPA as "Robotic process automation (RPA) is a digital enablement technology that predominantly leverages a combination of user interface (UI) and surface-level features to create scripts that automate routine, predictable data transcription work".

This Magic Quadrant focuses on the providers of RPA products and not service providers that leverage RPA capabilities licensed from another vendor. This research informs them of the main RPA tool vendors in an evolving marketplace driven by the dynamics of digital business, that it includes the following vendors: UiPath, Blue Prism, Automation Anywhere, Workfusion, Pegasystems, Another Monday, EdgeVerve Systems, NICE, Kofax, Servicetrace, Softomotive, Kryon, AutomationEdge, HelpSystems, Jacada, NTT, Antworks and Datamatics.

The main use cases for RPA solutions are based on integration of data.

Gartner has evaluated all vendors individually and did not rank or score them against each other. As Gartner explains, the inclusion in the Magic Quadrant does not necessarily mean that a vendor is capable for the needs of a particular user organization, but it can help when the evaluation is doing as the decision will depend of the specific evaluation criteria.

75% of the processes performed in the insurance sector can be digitized

According to estimates of Multiasistencia, up to 75% of processes in the insurance sector have the potential to be digitized, although it is estimated that currently only 30% of these processes have been automated. Microasistencia highlights the opportunities and challenges facing the sector to take advantage of the benefits of digitization:

1.- Omnicanality. It is necessary to make available to the insured all possible channels to interact throughout the process, guaranteeing their choice of use according to their preferences and promoting self-service according to their needs. Thus, it is necessary to take into account that the client prefers different channels according to the type of action he wants to do: compare, contract, claims, etc.

2.- Evolution of risk in a digital environment. Prevention, IoT appliances in the home will help limit the risk of damage. At the same time, the customer demands services beyond the risk coverage itself. In fact, more than 60% of people are willing to receive services as part of their premium and most are willing to pay for these services if they fit their profile. In this sense, the digitization helps to have more information to be able to adapt this type of services to the client.

3.- Differentiation of the operative. Real-time customer knowledge enables you to analyze it better. 20% of the insured produce 175% of the value of the industry and the operations must adapt automatically to this differentiation.

4.- Automation of processes. Multi-assistance has enabled and automated the key points of the claims management, such as the evaluation of coverages in opening, pre-assessment and assessment of the incident or the assignment of participants to eliminate handicrafts. This can lead to improvements in costs and efficiencies of tasks that are done manually today. A clear example we have in the declaration of the incident.

5.- Personalization of the offer: The greater knowledge of the client and the ease of arrival through new means (such as social networks) are favoring disruptive movements focused on specific clients. The challenge is how to create a product to the person and a premium tailored to each and keep the balance between managed risks.

6.- Internet Of Things (IoT) in Multi-Risks. The technological solutions and the IoT will give greater value to the home insurance policy since they have an impact on safety and cost savings, two aspects highly valued by the insured. Some applications are the installation of intelligent thermostats that allow to improve energy efficiency and reduce consumption, surveillance cameras that record images and store them in the cloud, programming the turning on and off of lights during vacation periods or the installation of different Types of detectors that improve technical safety and risk prevention, such as natural gas and CO2 detectors, fire, water and movement or window opening, which allows alerting of possible intrusion into the home.

7.- The collaborative economy, among other options, vacant housing rental (airbnb) requires the digitalisation of the risk quotation process and the search for a model of approach according to the occupation of the dwelling.
